During summer 2015 tens of thousands refugees escaped to Europe. The term "refugee crisis" suggested that the escalation of the refugee movements was something completely new and the refugees were quickly defined as the problem for the European crisis. A historically informed perspective on the EU's border regime shows that European migration policy has been facing steadily increasing refugee movements for more than 20 years and that the EU has been systematically trying to prevent people from reaching Europe as a safe haven. The lecture will establish a historical perspective on the migration border regime, above all discussing the role of law and its postcolonial implications. The EU migration policy will be presented as a strategy to establish a neocolonial gatekeeper regime.
