According to the principle as stated by Dobzhansky, "nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution", in this project we try to shed light into the evolutionary history of prokaryotic species (comprising bacteria and archaea). The formidable increase in available computing power due to the promotion of Grid computing projects opens up new perspectives in analysing large-scale phylogenetic relationships based on entire prokaryotic genomes. By using entire genomes instead of single genes, biases due to horizontally transferred genes or saturational effects can be compensated for. Calculations of intergenomic distances and reconstruction of phylogenetic trees and networks mainly are conducted on the bwGRiD.
